The Difference Between Home Styling and Home Dressing

By Revital Reich – Architecture and Interior Design

The home is the place where we feel most comfortable. It is where we invite guests and friends, family members and loved ones. And when we host or spend quality time in front of the computer or with a good book—whether in the living room, bedroom, or kitchen—we want our home to look its best.

In the field of home design, you may encounter terms such as home styling or interior design. Some also use the term home dressing. Home styling or home dressing? Are they the same, or are there differences? The following clarifications will explain everything.

Home Styling in the Sense of Interior Design

Some designers refer to home styling and home dressing as synonymous terms. Others see home styling as a substitute for the term home design, in the sense of interior design.

If we refer to the meaning of interior design, it usually involves a significant and deep change in the characteristics of the home, including engineering or architectural aspects. In other words, this may include dividing spaces with drywall, removing a column or an old wall, redesigning the kitchen, lowering ceilings, replacing flooring, installing new sinks, and more.

In this case, the home undergoes an upgrade not only conceptually and aesthetically, but also architecturally. The idea of home dressing, however, is fundamentally different.

What Is Done in Home Dressing

Just as we like to refresh our wardrobe with new clothing, we can also “dress” the home from time to time with a more updated look.

Home dressing—essentially dressing the home in a new style—is a process that focuses mainly on external design. This means there is no full renovation, no replacement of flooring, no installation of new showers, and no addition of drywall.

It mainly involves the use of accessories and sometimes new color solutions.

The reason for such a step often comes from the desire to refresh and improve the living environment without entering into expensive renovations. Rearranging furniture, replacing accessories, and using the existing space differently can achieve refreshing and beautiful results.
